Under a new bill, the federal government will compensate New Jersey police and fire districts for Trump's security costs

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. reintroduced a bipartisan bill that would allow the Secret Service to reimburse state and local law enforcement and fire departments for their assistance in protecting President Trump at his Florida, New Jersey, and New York residences.

Kean reintroduced the Presidential Security Resources Reimbursement Act a week before Trump appears to visit Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster for the first time in his second term.

Since the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, state and local governments have worked with the Secret Service to protect the president’s properties.

“The Secret Service relies on strong collaboration with local law enforcement to fulfil its mission effectively,” Kean informed the crowd. “At the moment, small-town taxpayers and local governments bear a large portion of that responsibility.

We must ensure that our local law enforcement officers have the resources they need to do their jobs effectively. “I am reintroducing commonsense legislation to ensure adequate funding for security operations.”

Bedminster Mayor Larry Jacobs welcomed the news of the bill.

“When the Secret Service requested additional law enforcement, fire, and first aid resources from our township to help secure Trump National Golf Club, we recognised the importance of supporting their mission to protect all residents – including the President,” Jacobs told the media.

“However, the financial burden of this request, which could easily reach six figures, is simply too much for our small town to bear on its own.

I thank Congressman Kean for reintroducing this bill, which provides critical solutions to ensure that communities like Bedminster, and many others across the country, do not bear the entire financial burden of necessary security measures.”

According to reports from 2017, Bedminster incurs more than $30,000 in additional police costs whenever Trump spends the weekend at his club on Lamington Road.
