Alerts Issued for Our Region
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for Nicholas, western Greenbrier, and northwestern Pocahontas counties until 10 a.m. Thursday. A couple of inches of new snow and wind gusts up to 40 mph will exacerbate dangerous road conditions.
COLD WEATHER ADVISORY until 11 a.m. Wednesday in northwestern Pocahontas County and 10 a.m. in western Greenbrier County. Wind chill values as low as -10 to -15 degrees Celsius can cause hypothermia very quickly!
Tonight’s skies are mostly cloudy, with light snow showers continuing. Temperatures will drop to the low teens and upper single digits. At least the wind will die down tonight, with only a light breeze from the west expected.
Slick roads will continue to pose a travel risk tonight, particularly on secondary roads. There will be a long period of cold ahead; consider keeping a drip going on pipes to help prevent freezing.
Wednesday brings a few stray snowflakes, a westerly breeze, mostly cloudy skies, and high temperatures that struggle to reach 20 degrees. Our wind will pick up again, with gusts of up to 15 mph possible, lowering wind chill values to the single digits at times.
Thursday brings high pressure to the region, allowing sunshine to return. Despite the sun, another brutally cold day is on the way, with high temperatures in the teens.
With partly to mostly clear skies Thursday night and Friday, temperatures will drop to near zero for the majority of the region, with below-zero temperatures expected in mountainous areas.
Again, we are experiencing an extended period of cold weather in our region, with more than ten days in a row of temperatures below freezing. The last time we had ten consecutive days with high temperatures below freezing was in late December 2017/January 2018. This has only happened three times since 1997.
Friday promises to be a warmer day, with partly sunny skies as our next storm system approaches. We will see high temperatures rise to around 30 degrees, which, while about a dozen degrees below normal for this time of year, will feel quite pleasant!
Clouds will increase in the evening and overnight, bringing snow showers back to the region. The majority of the energy from this system will remain south of our region, but light snow overnight and into Saturday morning will cause slick roads once more, with a couple of inches of snow being a safe bet.
Saturday will be a snowy day again, with scattered snow showers expected on the upslope. Temperatures will struggle to rise significantly during the day, starting in the low 20s and only rising a few degrees to the upper 20s.
Daytime snow accumulations will be minimal, but embedded snow squalls will cause visibility problems. Black ice will pose a threat Saturday night and Sunday morning once more.
Sunday is another quiet but cold day, with the possibility of one or two isolated snowflakes in the mountains. With high pressure setting in, the sun will return, but it will be a cold day with high temperatures around 30 degrees.
On Monday, another system up to our north attempts to dive into the region. At this point, this does not appear to be a particularly impactful system, with a few snow showers. However, our temperatures will remain cool, with highs struggling to reach 30 degrees.
Tuesday brings more chances for light snow showers with a northwest flow. Expect mostly cloudy skies, with highs in the mid to upper 20s.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, another plume of colder air will enter the eastern US in the middle of the month, keeping high temperatures well below average.
We should be in the low 40s at this time of year, but we won’t even come close. Our pattern is generally quieter during that time period, and there are signs of a pattern shift to a much warmer end to the month and into February.
