WASHINGTON — Senator Shelley Moore Capito spoke at a press conference last Thursday in support of the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce government waste through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Capito emphasised the importance of reducing “bloated bureaucracies” to better serve the needs of the people.
Capito acknowledged the program’s potential impact on West Virginia workers, but remained optimistic about its future. “When it starts to hit close to home, like at NETL, or the Bureau of Fiscal Service, or Forest Service, it hurts,” she told me.
“So I think what we’re going to see in the long-run is going to see all of this sort of settle-out, find the jobs that are the ones that are absolutely critical, and if somebody’s left that job because of a government efficiency effort, hire back into those positions or hire that person back.”
She went on to say: “The goals are great, the methods are good, but the execution is probably a little rough at this point.”
