In Massachusetts, drivers age 75 and older have specific requirements for license renewal. Unlike younger drivers, those 75 and older must renew their licenses in person. These licenses must be renewed every five years.
To renew a license, you must visit a Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) service center. The RMV advises completing an online questionnaire to streamline the process. After completing the questionnaire, you should download, print, and sign the application to bring to the RMV.
When you go to the RMV, you will have to undergo a vision test. You can either have the test done at the RMV free of charge or have an exam performed by a certified ophthalmologist or optometrist outside of the RMV. If you choose to have an outside exam, it must be completed within one year of your renewal request, and the professional must complete a Class D and M Vision Screening Certificate. The RMV may also require a written or road test if there are indications of driver impairment.
The RMV can place restrictions or conditions on a person’s driver’s license after administering a driving test and discussing possible restrictions. The most common restriction for older drivers is to require glasses or corrective contact lenses.
Massachusetts allows anyone to report potentially unsafe drivers, and the RMV will accept this information. Concerns should be reported in writing on a Request for Medical Evaluation Form and faxed or mailed to the Medical Affairs office as directed on the form.
The RMV also provides free, hour-long presentations for older drivers, their family members, caregivers, and relevant organizations focusing on safe driving for seniors and the ins and outs of getting disability plates and placards in the state. To attend a presentation, you can complete a request form and mail or email it as directed.
AAA members can renew their licenses/IDs at a AAA location by making a reservation at aaa.com/appointments. If you are not a AAA member, visit Mass.Gov/RMV to make a reservation to renew at an RMV Service Center.
