A bill to eliminate 'awake terms' was filed in the West Virginia House

CHARLESTON, West Virginia – A bill aimed at eliminating “woke words and agendas from state government documents, websites, literature, and in person” was introduced in the West Virginia House of Delegates on Monday morning.

House Bill 2406, sponsored by Delegates Crouse, Drennan, Lucas, White, Brooks, Hornby, Masters, Amos, Petitto, Clay, and D. Cannon, would prohibit “exclusionary, sexist language” in state government business, taking effect immediately.

The bill states that the following “exclusionary and sexist terms shall be replaced with accurate female-affirming alternatives”

  • Rather than ‘pregnant people’ or ‘pregnant person,’ use ‘pregnant women’ or ‘pregnant mom’.
  • Rather than ‘chestfeeding,’ use ‘breastfeeding’.
  • Rather than ‘body fed’ or ‘person fed,’ use ‘breast fed’.
  • Rather than ‘human milk,’ use ‘breast milk’.
  • Rather than ‘birthing person,’ use ‘birth mom’.
  • Rather than ‘laboring person,’ use ‘birth mom’.
  • Rather than ‘menstruating person’ or menstruating people,’ use ‘woman’ or ‘women’.
  • Rather than ‘birth-giver,’ use ‘woman’.
  • Rather than ‘womxn’ or ‘womyn,’ use ‘woman’.
