Oak Hill, West Virginia:- Heavy rain is currently affecting our area, which has already received a lot of rain and snow this month. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details.
These are the current warnings issued for the area:
Flash flood warnings are in effect until late tonight in Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Summers, Tazewell, and Wyoming counties. However, we expect this warning to be extended.
A Flood Watch is in effect for the entire area until Monday, February 17th at 1 a.m. At 7 p.m. today, winter weather advisories expired in the Greenbrier Valley and Pocahontas County. More flood warnings may be issued as more rain falls in the area.
The majority of the area will receive 2.5 to 3.5 inches of rain through Sunday, causing flooding once again. However, flooding will be exacerbated by already saturated soil and remaining snowpack, particularly in the Greenbrier Valley.
The effects will range from swelling and flooding of rivers, streams, and creeks to mudslides and power outages. As more rain falls and the winds pick up, trees and power lines are more likely to be downed, resulting in outages and property damage. Prepare for an outage by having supplies such as food, water, and battery-powered devices on hand.
The remaining snowpack’s runoff and rainfall will have a significant impact on rivers, streams, and creeks. The Greenbrier River in Alderson is likely to rise above 16 feet in depth, causing flooding throughout town and downstream into Monroe and Summers counties.
Other streams and creeks will swell and overflow during this event. DO NOT drive or wade into floodwaters. Turn around and don’t drown!
