Card skimmers discovered at various Pennsylvania Walmarts; two arrested

Police arrested two people after they allegedly installed skimming devices at self-checkout registers in several Walmarts in central Pennsylvania.

Marcus Covaci, 20, of Florida, and a 16-year-old allegedly placed skimming devices on Walmart registers in Newberry Township, West Manheim Township, and Straban Township, according to charging documents.

The skimmers were discovered after a West Manheim Walmart Loss Prevention employee informed Troopers on February 1 that someone had placed a skimmer on a register and returned a few days later to check its history. State Police were given security footage from the incident.

Police said they learned about other card skimming incidents that the same people were allegedly involved in after sharing photos of them with other local authorities.

Skimmers were also discovered at the other stores on registers that the suspects were allegedly tampering with, and police were given additional images during the investigation.

Covaci was apprehended in the Adams County Walmart parking lot on February 5 after police said he returned to retrieve bank card information.

Police are unaware of the number of victims of the skimming scheme.

Covaci faces numerous felony charges, including theft, access device fraud, and conspiracy. He is currently incarcerated in York County Prison on a combined bail of $200,000, and a preliminary hearing in Adams County is scheduled for March 19.

The teen was transferred to Abraxas, a juvenile detention facility in Franklin County.
