White Sulphur Springs, WV – A local elementary school recently received a significant financial boost to help students receive a more well-rounded education.
Jim Justice made his final stop at White Sulphur Springs Elementary School while serving as governor of West Virginia.
During his visit, he delivered an inspirational speech to students and faculty, encouraging them to strive for excellence.
He also gave the school a check for $14 million, which will be used for new additions and renovations. Governor Justice worked with the School Building Authority to secure this funding.
“This community does not have one gymnasium, but now they have got a new one on the way and this school needs renovations like crazy and everything and I was really tickled to death when the SBA stepped up and said, ‘We are going to [help] White Sulphur [Springs Elementary],’ and so it is a big, big, big check for a community that has needed this for a long time,” according to Governor Justice.
Prior to Governor Justice’s visit, this school lacked an actual gym. They used their cafeteria for physical education classes.
Nancy Hanna is the associate superintendent of Greenbrier County Schools.
She told 59News that some of this money will go toward the construction of a multi-purpose room, which will include the gym that Justice mentioned, as well as other improvements such as updated entrances, exits, and playground upgrades.
“The school’s location is not the safest for students, particularly when they are outside playing on the playground, and the entrances and exits for parents picking up students are difficult. “So, this will improve all of those functions,” Hanna explained.
“I can’t tell you enough about what we should be doing for our children. We provide jobs. We provide opportunities for them to stay here rather than travel to Atlanta and Denver for work, which is exactly what we want,” added Governor Justice.
“We want to keep our family together. We want to be very proud of who we are. But first and foremost, we must do great things for our children; enabling them to learn in a better environment is critical.
Renovations will begin in the Summer of 2026.
