An explosion at one of Iran’s most important ports killed at least 14 people and injured hundreds, according to Iranian state media.
According to state media outlet Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, the explosion originated in a container at the Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas.
The explosion and subsequent fire injured at least 750 people, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), citing an Iranian emergency services spokesperson.
A video posted on social media depicts damaged buildings filled with smoke.
After the explosion, emergency services rushed to the scene. The port is critical to the country’s trade, accounting for the vast majority of goods loaded and unloaded in Iranian ports.
Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, a crisis management official in the area, confirmed that the cause of the explosion is being investigated.
