MERCER COUNTY, WV – A family feud turned into a criminal case this week when a man allegedly assaulted his brother and fled with a rental truck and trailer, prompting a multi-jurisdictional investigation.

According to Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Sizemore, the incident occurred while the two brothers were working and driving through Lewisburg, West Virginia. During an argument in the vehicle, one brother allegedly became enraged and punched the other in the face.

Despite the assault, the driver returned home to Kudos Court in Bluefield, WV. Upon arrival, the passenger jumped into the driver’s seat of the 2024 white Ram 3500 rental truck and drove away, taking with him a homemade trailer worth around $400.

The vehicle, rented from Enterprise in Princeton, was reported stolen, and local authorities quickly coordinated efforts to find it. Deputies were able to locate the suspect, who is currently in home confinement and wearing an ankle monitor. His whereabouts were traced to Bullet Bill Drive in Bluefield, Virginia.

A “be on the lookout” alert was issued, and the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department quickly located the vehicle driving eastbound on Route 460. A traffic stop confirmed that the suspect, Christopher Stables, was behind the wheel.

The vehicle and trailer were recovered at the scene, and the victim was able to reclaim his property.

Christopher Stables, 34, was arrested on charges of unlawful taking of a vehicle and petit larceny.
