UPPER GLADE- In softball, if one team does not get a hit all night, the other team will most likely win.
Fortunately for Lady Cavaliers fans, they were the ‘other team’ on Wednesday night.
Brilee Redden pitched a no-hitter for Greenbrier West, her second in a week and a half, and Brooklyn Adkins had 13 strikeouts, a grand slam, and six RBIs, as the Lady Cavs defeated the Webster County Lady Highlanders 13-1 away.
West started hot and finished hotter, scoring four runs in the first inning and seven in the sixth.
In the first inning, the Cavs got two quick outs against Webster pitcher Marangelee Rivera, and it appeared that the Highlanders would leave the field quickly.
However, it was not as quick as expected.
Redden singled, and Preslee Treadway walked. Adkins followed with a two-run single, giving the Cavs (7-4) an early 2-0 advantage. A few batters later, Ava Price singled to second base, bringing Adkins home, while Brooke Patterson scored on an error on the same play.
Greenbrier West led 4-0 after the first period.
Kenna Fields’ RBI single in the fourth and Patterson’s in the fifth gave the Cavaliers a 6-0 lead, which was more than enough for Redden. Aside from the six walks she allowed, Redden was virtually unhittable and appeared to have found her groove as the season neared its halfway point.
If there was any doubt about the outcome, West put that to rest in the sixth frame.
Kyndall Taylor singled in Ke. Fields to get the game started, and with the bases loaded three batters later, Adkins hit a long ball to left field that cleared the fence for her second grand slam of the season, and the Lady Cavaliers cruised to victory.
Adkins finished 2-4 with a home run and six RBIs. Redden went 2-3 and scored three runs. Ke. Fields went 2-3 with a run and an RBI, while Price drove in a run and scored another while going 2-4.
West will face Doddridge County at home on Saturday, April 19.
