This article will not include any political opinions; it will only provide information.

You make up your mind…

Maine Democratic Representative Nina Milliken is facing criticism from Mainers and other New Englanders.

According to a Maine Wire article, Milliken (Dem. Rep. Maine) stated last month, in an effort to restrict coyote hunting in Maine, that “deer don’t tend to go up North”.

As you might expect, many Mainers, particularly those living in Northern Maine, were perplexed.

Are there deer in Northern Maine?

Simply put, there are deer in northern Maine.

According to an NRA article, the 2024 biggest buck in Maine weighed 261 pounds and came from Fort Fairfield, ME, which is near the Canadian border.

Some people are exaggerating this fact, claiming that the state representative is out of touch, does not live in or represent Northern Maine correctly, and so on.

But was there any truth to the statement that deer don’t usually go up in northern Maine?

There is some truth to this statement…

According to David Trahan, Executive Director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, deer have always existed in Northern Maine, “but the loss of habitat and predation has largely wiped them out.”

So, as with most things, it could be a grey area.

It is not true that there are no deer in Northern Maine; we all know that is not the case, but there is a significantly smaller population than elsewhere.
