In everything related to United States numismatics, we occasionally come across true collector’s pieces with a high value. True, these types of pieces are not available to all Americans, but for historical purposes, it is worthwhile to learn about the coin or bill in question.
In this case, we’re talking about a very special $100 bill with such a fascinating history that it’s worth a lot to numismatic collectors in the United States. It is not possible to obtain one of these bills on a regular basis, but one was auctioned some time ago.
What does the high value $100 bill look like for US numismatics?
This bill appeared in the midst of the American Civil War, around the year 1863. With this in mind, it is clear why it is one of the most expensive official documents in history. The use of this bill assisted the United States in financing the war because it represents an amount of gold deposited in the United States Treasury.
As a result, it did not have the same value as today’s banknotes, but instead referred to the gold that the United States kept in safekeeping. According to Heritage Auctions, there are only three of these banknotes available, making it difficult to carry one in your pocket. Only one of these bills is up for auction; the other two are housed in the Smithsonian Museum.
To identify this banknote, simply look at the gold-dyed paper and the black ink used to add the information. On the back, we see the phrase “100 dollars” next to some gold coins.
