A woman from New York was arrested after police say she was found in possession of cocaine. The arrest took place on Sunday after the suspect was pulled over on one of the area’s busiest highways, according to officials. The woman is facing several charges, including 5th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Drug abuse has long been a major issue in the United States, with fentanyl and other opioids exacerbating an already dire situation, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

According to data compiled by NYC.gov, 3,026 people in New York died as a result of drug overdoses in 2022.

This is the highest number of deaths since reporting began in 2000.
