Target will close all of its locations in New York. Target has been suffering financially since discontinuing its ‘Diversity Equity and Inclusion’ policies after the Trump administration entered office. Foot traffic has decreased every week since a major boycott was declared.
Many long-time Target customers pledged never to return. While it was not surprising that certain corporations, such as John Deere and Walmart, reduced their DEI efforts, Target surprised its customers. The corporation had established a reputation for supporting black, minority, and women-owned businesses, as well as the LGBTQ community.
According to Forbes, Target’s foot traffic has decreased for the fifth consecutive week. Furthermore, concerns about Trump’s tariffs caused its stock to plummet to a 52-week low.
The economy is collapsing in comparison to where it was at the end of 2024, thus Target is suffering greatly in addition to the blowback from discontinuing its DEI operations.
Target has stated that it will participate in a shopping blackout, closing all of its stores in New York for 24 hours. All Target stores in New York State and worldwide will be closed on Sunday, April 20, 2025. According to the US Sun, stores will close so that employees can spend Easter with their family.
Costco, which has thrived since rebuffing calls to end its DEI program, will likewise be closed on Easter. Walmart will be open for shoppers (who are not boycotting) who need to do last-minute shopping.
