The company that manufactures Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles announced on Saturday that it would suspend shipments to the United States after President Trump’s tariffs went into effect this week.
Jaguar Land Rover Automotive, one of the largest automakers in the UK, described the move as a “short-term action” and stated that it would take time to develop a longer-term strategy to accommodate the new economic landscape.
“The USA is an important market for JLR’s luxury brands,” the automaker said in a statement to media outlets.
“As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans.”
Last month, Trump announced 25% tariffs on imported cars and light trucks, which went into effect on April 3, one day after the US president announced sweeping tariffs on dozens of other countries around the world.
According to Reuters, the United States imports 20% of British-made cars, ranking second only to the European Union.
According to The Associated Press, some UK automakers have begun building stockpiles in the United States to mitigate the effects of Trump’s tariffs. Data show that exports to the United States increased by 38.5 percent in December, 12.4 percent in January, and 34.6 percent in February compared to the previous year.
