Dominik Mysterio is the best recent example of a WWE superstar who went from undesirable to undeniable. Dominik, the son of legendary luchador Rey Mysterio, was dubbed the poster child for professional wrestling nepotism.
Many people thought Dominik was unworthy of his opportunities and couldn’t compare to his father, a three-time world champion. After WrestleMania 41, he is the intercontinental champion and one of the company’s most popular performers.
Dominik’s fortunes changed when he betrayed his father and sided with the Judgment Day. Distancing himself from his father allowed Dominik to grow into his character with the help of veterans such as Finn Balor, Rhea Ripley, and Damian Priest. Dominik eventually started getting jeered for the right reasons. Fans began to boo him, not because of who he was, but because of the character he played.
Dominik’s decision to abandon Rhea Ripley in favor of Liv Morgan at SummerSlam last year cemented his place on Raw. “Dirty Dom” duped his partner Ripley, assisting Morgan in winning the women’s world title and celebrating with a kiss. Dominik and Morgan became public enemies after cheating on Rhea, one of WWE’s most devoted fans.
“It was huge because it solidified us as the most hated couple in WWE after what we did,” Dominik told CBS Sports just days before WrestleMania. “Especially straight into Rhea’s face. I believe it left a sour taste in people’s mouths that they did not like. It only solidified our position as a stronger couple and faction in WWE.”
WWE awarded him his first singles title match at WrestleMania 41, where he faced Bron Breakker in a fatal four-way. It’s an opportunity Dominik had been looking for.
“It’s incredibly validating,” Dominik stated. “The fact that this is my first Mania competition for a singles title. It’s also my first Mania without my deadbeat dad present. It’s definitely a personal accomplishment for me.”
Dominik’s intercontinental title victory at WrestleMania was met with a roaring crowd reaction. He appeared surprised by the warm reception. It’s a promising sign, and it often happens to popular villains. The audience recognizes Dominik’s hard work and applauds the shot-callers for rewarding it.
“Whatever the company wants, I’m here for them,” Dominik stated. “I’m a team player, and they understand that. At the end of the day, whatever is best for business will happen.
