The Trump administration’s tariffs were officially announced earlier this month, but the majority are currently paused for 90 days.
China is the exception, with tariffs averaging 125% and potentially reaching 245% on some imports, according to a White House fact sheet.
For several months, some economists have insisted that the increase in import costs caused by taxation will have a direct impact on retailers.
These increases would then be passed on to American consumers, who would pay more for goods to cover the increase.
Several major retailers, including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, and Walmart, have recently addressed the tariffs, sending representatives to the White House on Monday to speak with Trump, according to Bloomberg.
While it is unclear what the discussions entailed, a Home Depot spokesperson told the publication that the company has previously worked with administrations from “both sides of the aisle”.
It also stated that it would continue to meet with government leaders about its business moving forward.
Target, Walmart, and Lowes did not respond.
The meeting isn’t entirely unexpected, given that Trump stated earlier this month that he would be willing to negotiate with corporations over tariffs.
“We’ll also talk to companies,” the President told reporters in an April 13 statement.
“You know, you have to show some flexibility. Nobody should be this rigid.”
Nonetheless, several everyday products are expected to see skyrocketing prices in the coming months.
This includes tea, bananas, avocados, sneakers, home furnishings, video games, clothing, toys, washers and dryers, and even foreign-made automobiles.
Some billionaires, such as Mark Cuban, have urged American shoppers to act quickly and buy as much as they can while prices remain stable.
“From toothpaste to soap, anything you can find storage space for, buy before they have to replenish inventory,” Cuban wrote on Bluesky, a social media platform.

IMPORT ISSUE
Experts have warned that avocados and coffee are of particular concern.
Dr. Sung Won Sohn, a prominent economist, warned in a recent interview with the New York Post that because avocados are perishable and imported, they will become more expensive quickly.
Kona Haque, research head at commodity trader ED&F Man, also stated that the United States is the “single largest importer of coffee in the world.”
According to Haque, it is the “ultimate nation of coffee drinkers” and that tariffs would “immediately” increase costs.
“At the end of the day, chocolate and coffee are not like automotive or shipbuilding, which Trump is trying to encourage more domestic production of,” she told me.
“The USA simply cannot produce these products.”
INCREASES INCOMING
According to supply chain expert David Warrick, other industries that rely on imported materials will be affected in the same way.
“For industries like automotive, electronics, and pharmaceuticals, where global component sourcing is deeply embedded, this will be felt almost immediately,” Warrick told the New York Post.
“Expect higher input costs, margin pressure, and difficult decisions about what gets passed on to consumers.”
E-commerce behemoths like Shein and Temu, both founded in China, have already informed their customers that price increases will take effect before the end of the month.
Discount retailer Five Below has even decided to suspend some imports completely.
