Governors of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky order flags to fly at half-staff in Pope Francis' honour

Charleston, West Virginia (WOWK) — The governors of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky have ordered that state buildings’ flags be flown at half-staff in honour of Pope Francis, who died Monday morning.

Each governor issued a proclamation, in accordance with a White House proclamation, stating that the flags would be lowered until sunset on the day of the Pope’s interment.

“We join Catholics around the world in mourning the death of Pope Francis,” West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said. “His Holiness served the Church with dignity, compassion, and humility, teaching us all how to live more closely to God. “May he rest in eternal glory with the Lord!”

“Pope Francis earned the title ‘The People’s Pope’ by showing kindness and mercy, standing for love above hate and extending a hand to help all people,” Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, tweeted. “He led by example, and his humility and devotion to God united people. His loss is significant, but his impact is greater.”
