Even though West Virginia basketball was denied a spot in the NCAA tournament, they made amends by signing the nation’s best three-point shooter.
The Mountaineers signed Chattanooga guard Honor Huff through the transfer portal on Saturday, according to On3Sports.com.
This year, he led the country with 131 three-pointers made. Four days ago, Huff was mentioned as a top three candidate for Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl.
Huff finished the season with Chattanooga, averaging 15.2 points per game and 41.6% from three. The Mocs finished the season 29-9 overall, including a 15-3 record in the Southern Conference.
They won the NIT championship in overtime, defeating UC Irvine 85-84. Huff made his debut at Virginia Military Institute during the 2021-2022 season.
He appeared in all 32 games, starting 18, and led the team in scoring with an average of 10 points per game. However, after deciding to transfer, he was forced to sit out the 22-23 season.
This is Huff’s third transfer in four years.
West Virginia finished 19-13 overall and 10-10 in the Big 12 conference last season. They also became the first team to skip the 68-team tournament.
While the Mountaineers were disappointed, they acquired a valuable asset.
Honor Huff brings a strong pedigree of experience
In addition to West Virginia, Hoff is strongly considering Pittsburgh, Iowa, St. Johns, and Vanderbilt. Now that Huff has joined the Mountaineers, he brings a wealth of experience as a guard that meets some specific requirements.
The Mountaineers are looking for guards who can shoot, handle the ball, and make plays. Huff fits all three criteria with his ability to score high, pass effectively, and engage others.
He also competed in multiple conferences and has a winning record.
West Virginia boasts some notable talent that is returning or expected to return. Sophomores Ofri Naveh, Aden Tagaloa-Nelson, and Jeremiah Bembry will return, as will junior Josiah Harris and senior Seth Wilson.
Starting point guard Kerr Kriisa and guard Noah Farrakhan may return. Each of these players has proven their worth or possesses some potential.
Given his background, Hoff will fit right in.
