Charleston, WV (WOAY) The West Virginia Humanities Council announced on Monday, April 7, 2025, that it will suspend statewide grantmaking effective immediately.
According to a media release, the WV Humanities Council relies on federal funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to run its grants program and pay out the grants it awards.
In early April, the West Virginia Humanities Council, along with every other state humanities council, received a Notice of Grant Termination from the NEH, which cancelled federal funds effective immediately, as directed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). According to the notice, no additional federal funding is expected for the remainder of 2025.
With no additional federal funds expected and no indication that federal support for our work will be restored in the future, the West Virginia Humanities Council must suspend grantmaking indefinitely until congressionally appropriated funding is again made available.
WOAY will provide you with updates on this developing story as they become available.
