Clarksburg, West Virginia (WBOY) – With the rise of antisemitism across the country, organizations such as the West Virginia Senate are taking steps to combat the problem through education.
Senate Bill 54 was passed by the Senate in late March and is now being considered by the House. Mike Oliverio sponsored the bill, which would require students to be taught age-appropriate Holocaust curriculum beginning in sixth grade.
12 News spoke with a representative from the Yad Vashem USA Foundation, whose mission is to continue educating the world about the Holocaust and preventing future events like it.
“It’s amazing that that bill was passed, and we hope that many other states will do the sameā¦ Tamar Major, National Director of Philanthropy for the Yad Vashem USA Foundation, explains that Yad Vashem aims to educate people worldwide about how one group was targeted and exterminated in modern western society.
Major stated that the organization can provide educational materials to schools and educate teachers on how to best teach the history of the Holocaust, and that while West Virginia legislators have not yet contacted Yad Vashem, it is an available resource.
