Supplemental Security Income (SSI) helps people who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled.
Understanding the payment schedule is critical for budgeting, especially given the changes coming in 2025.
What Is Supplemental Security Income?
Individuals with low income and resources, as well as those with disabilities, blindness, or age 65 and up, are eligible for SSI.
Children with disabilities may also qualify. In general, eligibility is based on earning less than $2,019 per month at work and having resources of less than $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples, including money in bank accounts or vehicles.
To receive SSI payments, you must apply, but people over the age of 65 do not need to be disabled.
April 2025 SSI Payment Schedule
If you received two SSI payments in February but none in March, don’t worry; you’ll get your next check on April 1, 2025.
If the payment does not arrive on time, the SSA recommends waiting three extra mailing days before contacting them.
Most payments are delivered electronically on time, usually on the first of the month, unless it is a weekend or federal holiday.
This scheduling adjustment began in November 2024, with double payments in some months.
Approximately 7.4 million Americans receive monthly SSI payments, and roughly one-third also receive Social Security benefits.
Social Security Payment Schedule
For retired and older adults, Social Security payments are sent on Wednesdays based on birth date:
- 1st–10th: Paid on the second Wednesday
- 11th–20th: Paid on the third Wednesday
- 21st or later: Paid on the fourth Wednesday
Exceptions:
- Spouses and children receiving benefits based on someone else’s work record are paid on the same day as the primary beneficiary.
- Those who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of the month.
- If your Medicare premiums are covered by your state, you may also receive payments on the 3rd of each month.
SSI Payment Changes in 2025
SSI recipients will receive two payments in May, one on May 1 and another on May 30, similar to the double payment in February, because June 1 is a weekend.
This pattern will repeat in August and October, resulting in no SSI checks in September or November.
