SSI recipients will get April check on regular schedule, but upcoming months will vary

After receiving two Supplemental Security Income checks in February, beneficiaries will receive their April payment on time – but May brings additional payment complications.

SSI checks are usually issued on the first of each month, unless the date falls on a federal holiday or weekend. SSI checks will arrive on Tuesday, April 1.

Approximately 7.4 million Americans who may be disabled or have limited resources receive monthly SSI benefits. Approximately one-third of those on SSI also receive Social Security.

Most recipients of traditional Social Security payments, whether they are elderly or retired, receive them on Wednesdays of each month.

According to the Social Security Administration’s calendar, if your birthdate falls between the first and tenth of the month, you are paid on the second Wednesday of the month; between the eleventh and twentieth, you are paid on the third Wednesday of the month; and if you were born after the twentieth of the month, you are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

Recipients who began getting Social Security before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of the month – and if they also get SSI, that benefit comes on the 1st.

SSI payment calendar: More quirks ahead

In May, SSI recipients will receive two checks: the May SSI payment is scheduled to be issued on May 1, according to the SSA calendar, and the June SSI payment on May 30 – payments are issued early because June 1 is a weekend.

As was the case in March, SSI beneficiaries will not receive a payment in June.

The calendar quirk reappears in August, when SSI recipients receive two checks – the August payment on August 1 and the September payment on August 29 – but no payment for the calendar month of September.

SSI recipients will also receive two checks in October, but none in November, according to the SSA calendar.

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income is a benefit payment for people 65 and older who have limited income or resources, are blind, or have a qualifying disability. Children with a qualifying disability can also receive SSI, according to the SSA’s website.

Adults who qualify for SSI typically earn no more than $2,019 per month from work.

If you or someone you know believes they may be eligible for SSI, you can start the application process online, in person at your local Social Security office, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time during the workweek.

If you plan to apply for Social Security or SSI in the near future, you should set up an online account right away if you haven’t already, because the agency will begin implementing “stronger identity verification procedures,” including online identity proofing, on March 31.
