Tens of thousands of American citizens are waiting to receive a stimulus check that comes only once a year and has only one requirement: living in a specific state. The Permanent Fund Dividend (PDF) distributes profits from oil extraction in North America.
Alaska’s fiscal 2025 state budget, signed by Gov. Mike Dunleavy, sets the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) at $1,718 per person. This amount exceeds the $1,702 delivered in 2024, which reflects changes in income projections and the number of beneficiaries. The figure confirms an upward trend, but officials warn that the final value may differ due to legislative changes.
Who receives an extra $1,702 stimulus check?
Residents have until March 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. to apply. Those who fail to meet the deadline will be excluded. Payments have historically been distributed in October, though the exact date for 2025 has yet to be announced. Online applications through the myPFD portal are preferred, but physical forms can also be submitted at designated centers.
To qualify, applicants must have lived in Alaska for all of 2024 and intend to stay indefinitely. Additionally, they cannot have claimed residency in another state or country after December 31, 2023.
Those incarcerated for serious crimes in 2024 are automatically excluded, and absences lasting more than 180 days must be justified using specific criteria.
How is the PFD stimulus check calculated?
The PFD is calculated by taking the Permanent Fund’s five-year average net income and adjusting for prior obligations and operating expenses. The Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation reported that the fund’s unaudited value was $81.3 billion as of February 28, 2025.
The decade-long projections included in the 2025 budget suggest variable per capita amounts, but the final amount is dependent on legislative decisions.
In any case, having up-to-date information, particularly the permanent residence address in Alaska, is critical to avoiding delays or the check arriving at the wrong location.
Changes can be made online for digitally signed requests or through the “Change of Address” form. Check application status at myinfo.pfd.dor.alaska.gov and report any errors or pending requirements.
Assistance offices are open Monday through Friday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, until March 28, 2025. On March 31, the Seward Day holiday, the Anchorage and Fairbanks offices will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while Juneau will be closed, but paper applications will be accepted at the Willoughby Avenue entrance.
Some exceptions that do not affect eligibility for the PDF stimulus check
“Permitted absences” include work trips, military service, and medical treatment. Those who were away for more than 180 days in 2024 must provide documentation to support their claims. Applicants must have spent at least 72 consecutive hours in Alaska during 2023 or 2024. This requirement is intended to ensure a tangible connection to the state.
