A progressive grassroots group is urging Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to resign after assisting in the passage of a Republican-crafted government funding bill.

Indivisible, a group formed during President Donald Trump’s first administration, called the bill’s passage a “travesty,” blaming Schumer in particular for squandering a “point of leverage” and “wave[d] the white flag of surrender” by voting to pass the bill to avoid a shutdown.

Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin cited votes by the group’s leaders in New York, Schumer’s home state, and across the country as evidence of overwhelming disapproval of his vote, arguing that new Senate Democratic leadership is needed.

“In a vote, the two groups gave us clear direction: 82% of group leaders in New York and 91% of Indivisible group leaders nationwide voted to call for Schumer’s resignation as Senate Minority Leader.” As a result, Indivisible is calling on Chuck Schumer to step down from Senate Democratic leadership.

We appreciate his service, but we need new leadership in this moment, and we understand that to get there, we need a chorus of support for change,” Levin said in a statement.

The group concluded by advising all Senate Democrats to demand Schumer’s resignation and “begin making plans for new leadership immediately.”

The calls for Schumer to resign from Senate leadership come as the Democratic Party is divided over the bill, raising questions about Schumer’s ability to lead his caucus.

Susan Rice, former President Joe Biden’s domestic policy adviser, was among those who criticized Schumer. She urged all Senate Democrats to vote against the bill in a social media post, telling Schumer to “please grow a spine.” “And quickly.”
