A Michigan mother is accused of murdering her son the day before his 18th birthday, claiming he wanted to die by suicide.

According to online court records, Katie Lee faces charges of open murder as well as resisting and obstructing an officer.

According to a news release from the Holland, Michigan Department of Public Safety, police responded to Lee’s home early on February 21 due to a report of a domestic incident. When police arrived, Lee, 39, was reportedly holding a knife. She was apprehended after the police used a Taser.

Inside the apartment, police discovered the body of Lee’s 17-year-old son, Austin Dean Pikaart.

According to a complaint obtained by WZZM and WOOD, Lee called 911 that morning and informed the dispatcher that she was unable to get Austin to stop breathing after “trying for a while.”

According to the WZZM report, Lee told a dispatcher that she and her son attempted suicide by overdosing on medication.

Austin eventually passed out, and Lee allegedly cut his throat and arm with the knife, according to the report, which cited the document.

Lee allegedly told police she wanted to be killed so she could be with her son, according to WOOD.

WOOD reported that a detective testified at Lee’s court appearance on February 24.

“She advised her son asked her to help him stop breathing because he did not want to turn 18,” a detective reportedly told a judge.

Lee pleaded not guilty, and her bond was denied. According to online records, she is scheduled to appear in court again on March 4.

“Austin was an exceedingly interesting character who had a love for cats, science, books, fishing with his dad, rollercoasters and video games,” according to his obituary. “Austin had a patient, gentle, kind hearted soul as well as a great love for helping others.”
