CHARMCO West Virginia – Police have arrested two people in connection with a financial fraud investigation in Charmco. The West Virginia State Police have released the following information:
“On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Sergeant N.J. Hersman received a complaint regarding fraudulent activity on a bank account owned by Jane Boggess (82-year-old female from Charmco, WV) and her now-deceased husband, George Boggess (87-year-old male from Charmco, WV). During his investigation, Sergeant Hersman discovered that Steven Simpson (40-year-old male from Charmco, WV) and Ashley Simpson (34-year-old female from Charmco, WV) had completed construction work on Mr. and Mrs. Boggess’ home. Mr. and Mrs. Simpson then used the routing and account numbers from a check they received to make fraudulent ACH payments to their own accounts. Mrs. Boggess was unaware of the fraudulent transactions for a long time, until her account became overdrawn. The fraudulent activities occurred between August 2023 and December 2024, totaling approximately $36,000.00.
“On Friday, February 21, 2025, Mr. and Mrs. Simpson were arrested and charged with 103 counts of computer fraud, financial exploitation of an elderly person, and fraudulent schemes.” Mr. Simpson is currently being held at the Southern Regional Jail on a $50,000 secured bond, while Mrs. Simpson is held on a $100,000 secured bond. During this investigation, Sergeant Hersman was assisted by First Sergeant B.S. Burner of the BCI.
