According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Marana Regional Airport is an uncontrolled field.
WHAT IS AN UNCONTROLLED FIELD?
The FAA defines an uncontrolled field as an airport without an operating ATC control tower.
Pilots use a common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) to communicate their position to other pilots near the airport. The pilot-in-command is responsible for ensuring that other aircraft operate safely. Pilots in these fields must adhere to all FAA regulations, including minimum visibility, minimum safe altitudes, and right-of-way rules.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating.
Earlier this month, an aircraft crashed on a runway at Scottsdale Airport, killing a pilot and injuring four others.
