President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he has ordered the dismissal of all remaining US attorneys nominated by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
“Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicised like never before,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Therefore, I have instructed the termination of ALL remaining ‘Biden Era’ U.S. Attorneys,” claimed the president.
“We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY, and restore confidence,” stated President Donald Trump. “America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY!”
It is customary for an incoming president to replace the federal prosecutors, known as US attorneys, appointed by their predecessors.
There are 93 US solicitors, one for each of the nation’s 94 federal court districts. Two districts share a US attorney.
Each district’s top federal law enforcement officer is a US attorney.
Following Trump’s November election victory, several US solicitors nominated by Democrat Biden resigned in anticipation of being replaced.
The Justice Department, which Trump accuses of unjustly prosecuting him, has undergone a massive shakeup since the Republican took office, with several high-ranking officials fired, demoted, or reassigned.
Among those fired were members of special counsel Jack Smith’s office, who brought two now-defunct criminal cases against Trump.
The acting US Attorney for the powerful Southern District of New York, a Trump appointee, resigned last week after the Justice Department asked him to drop corruption charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
