Former school resource officer charged with crimes against students

PRINCETON, WV. — A former school resource officer at Princeton Senior High School has been charged with crimes against a student.

According to a criminal complaint, Christopher Chad Butler, a police officer with the Princeton Police Department and a school resource officer at Princeton Senior High School (PSHS), was charged with sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian, or person in a position of trust, as well as gross neglect of a child resulting in a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury.

According to the criminal complaint, Butler allegedly engaged or attempted to engage in sexual intercourse with a minor PSHS student who was temporarily in Butler’s care, custody, or control in Mercer County between August 1, 2023 and January 9, 2024.

According to the criminal complaint, Butler also allegedly neglected a child, putting the child at risk of death or serious bodily injury on or around September 16, 2023. He allegedly allowed a minor female to brandish a handgun, endangering her and others present.
