A man was arrested in White Sulphur Springs during a disturbance on Main Street

White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia – A Virginia Beach man was arrested on Sunday, February 9, 2025, for causing a disturbance on Main Street West, obstructing traffic, and allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Patrolman S. L. Morris of the White Sulphur Springs Police Department reported that the incident occurred around 4:40 p.m., when he was flagged down by a passerby near the union hall. The individual reported seeing a suspicious male walking in the middle of the road in front of Gillespie’s, waving his hands and shouting.

When officers found the man, later identified as Felipe Martinez Jr., they noticed him stopping cars, shouting erratically, and acting agitated. As Patrolman Morris approached, Martinez allegedly tried to open the patrol vehicle’s locked passenger door while yelling “Kill me” and “Shoot me.”

Attempts to calm Martinez and obtain his identification failed. Officers detected the odor of alcohol, and Martinez refused to follow instructions, repeatedly stepping into traffic. When officers tried to detain him for safety reasons, he resisted by pulling away and shouting threats. While being subdued, he fell and hit his mouth on the ground.

Patrolman A. Simms arrived to assist, and officers discovered an ID card in Martinez’s jean pocket. Martinez continued to resist while awaiting EMS assessment and was placed in the back of a patrol vehicle, where he began kicking the cage and banging his head against it.

EMS arrived on the scene but were unable to assess Martinez due to his continued aggressive behavior. Officers arrested him, charging him with public intoxication, obstructing an officer, and two counts of battery on a police officer. Martinez allegedly kicked Patrolman Simms twice as he was being transported to the White Sulphur Springs Police Department.

Following a consultation with Magistrate Stover, officers were advised to transport Martinez directly to the Southern Regional Jail. While on his way, he continued to kick and bang his head against the cruiser cage. Martinez was booked into SRJ and remains in custody pending his arraignment in Greenbrier County Magistrate Court.
