FAIRLEA– Whether fans head to Spartan Stadium for a Friday night football game or take a seat inside the Spartan Gym in Fairlea, one name is broadcast over both PA systems: Spartan junior Brody Hamric.
Hamric, who set football passing records at Eastern Greenbrier Middle School, has been one of the school’s most consistent athletes in recent years. He is a two-time honorable mention all-state football selection and is now in his second year as a starter on the basketball team, where he averages around 14 points per game.
The one thing that distinguishes Hamric is his selflessness and willingness to do whatever it takes to win a game. Whether he’s passing the ball and setting up his teammates, driving to the basket for a shot in the paint, or pulling up for a deep three, Hamric’s redeeming feature is putting a number in the win column, and that attitude spreads to his Spartan teammates.
“I like our team because we all want to see each other do well,” he said.
The guard attributes his success to his own growth and the leadership abilities he has developed over time.
“I believe I’ve become faster, stronger, and smarter. “The game has slowed down for me,” Hamric explained.
“As I’ve grown older, I’ve definitely become a leader in both sports. “I lead by example and am vocal,” he said.
For some two-sport athletes who compete in consecutive seasons, the transition from football to basketball can be difficult. However, Hamric finds it natural given the amount of work he does on a daily basis.
“I play AAU basketball from the end of the basketball season until the beginning of the football season, and even during the football season, I am in the gym practicing shots. The most difficult challenge is taking care of my body and staying healthy because football is such a physical sport. Hamric also explained that basketball conditioning differs from football conditioning.
Hamric’s parents, Jon and Hilary, have also had an impact on his career.
“My dad has always encouraged me to stay in the gym and improve. “My mother has always been there for me through the good times and the bad,” Hamric said.
So, when it comes to this season and the Spartans’ chances to do something special, Hamric stated that getting that special trip to Charleston in mid-March is his top priority right now.
“Our goal and expectation is to have a winning season. Making it to the state tournament would be a great accomplishment for this season. I like our team, so making it to the state tournament is a possibility,” he explained.
One thing is certain: Hamric will leave a legacy at Greenbrier East. His coaches will have had a significant impact on his development both on and off the court.
“My coaches have helped shape me into the leader I am today, and they constantly boost my confidence. My coaches help me during both off seasons. My basketball and football coaches both attend my games. Coaches from both teams taught me accountability, but most importantly, to put God first,” Hamric said.
