In Virginia, drivers age 75 and older have specific requirements for driver’s license renewal. These rules focus on identifying and handling older drivers who may have become unsafe.
Renewal Time Limits and Location
- Drivers age 75 and older must renew their licenses every five years.
- Renewal must be done in person.
Testing Requirements
- Vision Test: A vision test is required at renewal. This can be done for free at the DMV or by an outside ophthalmologist or optometrist. If using an outside professional, they must complete a Customer Vision Report and conduct the exam within 90 days of the renewal request.
- Written Test: DMV personnel may require a written test at their discretion.
- Road Test: DMV personnel may require a road test at their discretion.
