Burton, South Carolina (WCSC) Burton firefighters responded to another structure home fire Saturday afternoon.
The Burton Fire District, MCAS Fire and Emergency Services, and Beaufort County EMS all responded to the reported home fire in the Lakeview Mobile Home Park off Joe Frazier Road shortly after 1 p.m.
When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the front door of a single-wide mobile home. Crews entered and discovered flames on the stove and reading up through the cabinets.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire in the kitchen while searching for occupants.
Nobody was inside during the incident.
They also discovered that the fire damage was limited to the stove and cabinets, but the smoke caused damage throughout the mobile home.
Due to a power outage, the family of four (three adults and an infant) were forced to relocate.
The Red Cross was notified to help the family.
According to crews, their home had smoke alarms that did not work properly because they were ‘old.’
Firefighters want to remind landlords and property owners that it is their legal responsibility to ensure that smoke alarms are working and properly installed inside their homes.
This is the Burton Fire District’s sixth structure fire, and the deadliest time of year for fires in South Carolina.
