Huntington, West Virginia (WSAZ) While you wait for those W-2s to arrive at the end of the month, you may want to postpone submitting your state income taxes.
That’s because West Virginians could receive a large tax reduction when they file this year, but you’ll have to wait for some mail.
Cabell County Assessor Irv Johnson says some things, such as boats and campers, are not eligible for the tax credit.
“The big kicker is that you’ve had to have paid timely, meaning you had to pay on time,” Mr. Johnson explained. “If you paid late, then you’re not eligible for the rebate.”
Johnson emphasizes the importance of waiting until you receive a notice from the West Virginia Tax Division before filing your state income taxes.
“The nicest aspect is that we are receiving our money back. “It’s a significant tax break for West Virginians,” Johnson explained. “The paperwork is the only negative aspect of this. Now that you’ve paid your money, you must wait for a notification from the state before filing your income tax. So you’ll have to pay to get it back.”
The rebate is a dollar-for-dollar match for qualified vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, and motorbikes.
“It is actually a credit against your state tax.” So, if you owe any taxes, that will be deducted,” Johnson explained.
Johnson argues that if you didn’t pay on time in 2024, 2025 is the year to make it right so you can claim the credit in 2026.
“Let’s learn from that and get back on track for 2025, because right now you’re gonna get the taxes you paid back in 2024,” Johnson told the crowd. “If you don’t pay on time, you’re not eligible.”
Johnson believes it’s vital to be patient right now because this is a new program.
There’s a potential you’ll receive another letter for stuff like ATVs.
