Sen. Jim Justice (R-W.Va.) claimed President Trump only needs “a little time” as alarm and dismay spread over the executive moves he took in the first few days of his second term.
In an interview with NBC News, Justice supported Trump’s decision to suspend the delivery of federal loans and grants, despite considerable criticism that erupted following the announcement on Tuesday.
“The way you tackle a problem is first of all, you freeze everything, you stop everything for a time period where you can really get your hands around it and make the right decisions,” Mr. Justice remarked.
A federal judge temporarily halted Trump’s plan to freeze government help just minutes before it was set to take effect.
Former President Biden’s appointee, U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan, was randomly given the case and granted a “brief administrative stay.” The stay extends government help until at least Monday at 5 p.m.
NBC also asked Justice about West Virginia’s hydrogen energy hub, which is sponsored by the Inflation Reduction Act, which Trump may abolish.
The new senator said he is not concerned about Trump’s actions and, as a conservative, supports the majority of what the new president has done in the last week.
“I really believe that President Trump will make the right moves,” he told reporters.
“He’ll make the right moves on the chess board, but we’ve got to give him time to get his arms around it,” says Justice. “You can’t get your arms around if it’s a moving target.”
